> “As an entrepreneur building without access to capital, it was necessary for me to learn to work in every aspect of my business.”
— Angela K. Chambers, Ph.D.
When you’re an entrepreneur, especially one building without traditional access to capital, the reality looks very different from what most business experts describe. You often have to wear many hats — not because you want to, but because you must.
Many times, the people who tell you that you “shouldn’t be doing all the things in your business” are the same ones who want you to hire them. They have to justify why their role is necessary. And yes, outsourcing can be smart — once you understand the process yourself.
If you don’t know what’s required to reach your end goal, you could easily waste both money and time — two things you can’t get back. You might hire someone, trust their expertise, and later discover you still have to redo or finish the work yourself.
Be Strategic About What You Learn and What You Spend
Building a business, particularly as a Black woman or other minority entrepreneur, often means doing more with less. Statistics continually show that minorities, especially Black women, are at the bottom when it comes to access to capital and startup funding.
That’s why it’s crucial to think like you would when managing your home:
◾If you can do it yourself, do it.
◾If you must pay for it, make sure it’s worth the trade-off of your time and money.
Learning new skills is not a setback — it’s empowerment. Every entrepreneur should make it a weekly goal to learn something beneficial for their business. Whether it’s bookkeeping, branding, or scheduling tools, small consistent learning keeps you sharp and self-sufficient.
Understand Marketing — It’s Not Optional
One of the most essential areas to master is marketing. Every business owner should know how to promote their business, create basic graphics, or at least modify templates they can reuse repeatedly.
The truth is, no marketer can guarantee your sales. You are your own best promoter because you understand your audience and your message best.
There are countless free and affordable platforms where you can design social media posts, flyers, and digital materials. It’s wise to invest in professional marketing occasionally — especially for major campaigns or product launches — but everyday advertising doesn’t have to drain your budget.
As a rule of thumb, your marketing budget should be around 10–30% of your gross revenue, depending on your industry and growth stage.
Adapt and Stay Ahead
With the rise of AI technology and the decline in traditional workforce participation, business owners must think strategically about what they pay for and what they learn to do themselves.
Owning and operating a business in today’s economy requires more than delegation — it requires adaptability.
So, let’s learn. Let’s strategize. Let’s grow.
Let’s build.
