An Open Letter to District 1 City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper

An Open Letter to District 1 City Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper

Having lived in Tulsa for more than three decades, one thing has become painfully clear to me: District 1 has too often received the short end of the stick.

I was disappointed to learn that you, our current City Councilor, has chosen not to attend the upcoming community forum scheduled for July 23, 2026, at Tulsa Community College, one of your places of employment.

In my view, the only understandable reason for an elected official not to attend a public forum hosted for the people they represent would be a legitimate safety concern. From everything I know, safety is not the issue.

There has certainly been conflict throughout this election season. There have been harsh comments, videos, accusations, and criticism coming from many directions, including supporters on all sides. Unfortunately and regrettably, it has become part of a competitive political environment in District 1.

The reality is that whoever occupies the District 1 City Council seat over the next two years will continue to face difficult conversations and conflict. Why? Because the people of District 1 are demanding change.

We are asking for a representative who will fight to make District 1 a priority. We have waited too long for meaningful investment in our infrastructure, safer and improved roads, responsible development, efforts to maintain affordable utility rates, greater economic opportunities, and transparent leadership.

This is a new season.

We are declaring that our representative will work for the people—not personal interests. They will be transparent. They will be accountable. They will place the needs of the community above their own. They will work to unite District 1 rather than divide it.

True unity cannot exist when leaders only engage with groups that agree with them or only participate in environments where they control the questions and the conversation. Leadership requires showing up—even when the discussions may be difficult.

Respectfully, I am asking you, Councilor Vanessa Hall-Harper, to reconsider your decision not to attend the District 1 Community Forum on July 23, 2026, at Tulsa Community College.

The residents of District 1 deserve the opportunity to hear directly from every candidate and every elected official seeking to lead them. Even when opinions differ, respectful dialogue strengthens our democracy and builds trust within our community.

Vanessa, I hope you will choose to attend, engage with the people you represents, answer their questions, and demonstrate the leadership that this moment requires.
