A Tribute to Grandma Tee

A Tribute to Grandma Tee

I am profoundly thankful for each day, and my heart is often reminded of my beloved "Grandma Tee." Wilma "Tee" Factory Phifer Green (WFPG), my paternal grandmother, graced this world for 106 vibrant years. I had the privilege of witnessing the dawn of many of her birthdays, each beginning with her joyful proclamation, "Thank you, Lord. I made it another year."

The Spirit of Grandma Tee

Grandma Tee was a force of nature—dynamic, loving, kind, fun, and witty. Her love for God, life, "me" and her family, and friends was immense and infectious. Her birthday, February 12th, became a legendary event. Each year, many anticipated her "surprise telephone invitation to her surprise birthday party," orchestrated by none other than "The Birthday Girl" herself. Her zest for life and appreciation for each year taught me the significance of gratitude, especially as life's unexpected challenges arise. She often declared, "I am not going anywhere until Jesus comes back." At 106, we believed she'd be with us until the end of time.

A Grandmother's Influence

I was blessed to have Grandma Tee in my life until I reached the age of 50! Some of my cousins were even older. Even at 106, she remained sharp, witty, and full of questions. I could speak about her endlessly, for her influence was profound.

Embracing Gratefulness

In truth, while I jest about my age, I am deeply thankful for every year. I've been blessed to live, overcome challenges, endure losses, celebrate victories, and cherish birthdays. However, it wasn't until recent health scares following my campaign for District 1 City Council that I truly paused to reflect and surrender to my Heavenly Father.

During my campaign, I realized I wasn't as youthful as I believed. My body reminded me daily as I tightened my shoelaces to campaign door-to-door. Towards the campaign's end, the pain became unbearable, leading to a four-day stay in one of Tulsa's finest resorts - the hospital.
While the physical rest was necessary, it seemed I traded physical pain for the mental torment of the "unknown." When the Hospitalist questioned if I had been a long-time smoker due to a sizable mass on my esophagus, it felt like a bad dream.

As a small business owner, Nana, and mother, I realized I had neglected self-care in my efforts to care for others. Note to self: "Don't do that anymore." By the way, I am not and was not a smoker.

Overcoming Health Challenges

Since that initial scare, more followed—esophagus to larynx, neck to spine, colon to spine, abnormal mammogram, and even a leaky heart valve. It was overwhelming, and at times, I doubted my ability to overcome it.

But, "Thank God," I know a healer and surrounded myself with those who reminded me of my faith. The prayers from my husband, children, family, and friends have been a constant source of strength. My dad was determined that I would overcome it all. While more tests and procedures lie ahead, I believe I am already healed and am grateful to celebrate another birthday.

Live for Today

Today is a gift. Live it fully! The Bible advises us not to worry about tomorrow. Let me encourage you to embrace today. Celebrate simply because it is. On your birthday, throw yourself the grandest surprise party, even if you are the host, just like Grandma Tee!

You are here today, for today, and on purpose. Live. Live. Live.

Happy Birthday to me and to you! Please share your birthday below, and I will be sure to celebrate with you!
